―Octavius to Larry

Octavius is a Roman in the Roman Empire Diorama at the Museum of Natural History. He is the enemy and later the bestfriend of Jedediah, being portrayed by Steve Coogan. With a strong heart and a cunning mind, Octavius is a supporting character in Night at the Museum, Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian, Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb, Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again and Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian: The Video Game.

Background[]

Octavius is a clever, brave, and experienced general of a Roman legion. Though he seems to lead with grace and wisdom, he can be stubborn and hostile towards people he thinks of as barbarians, such as Jedediah, the cowboy whose glass case sits next to his own. At first, the two do not get along and are unwilling to cooperate due to their apparent differences, and even end up fighting. But seeing as they have no choice, they end up working together and find they have a lot of common ground; both being great leaders who want what's best for their people. They become fast friends and are not often seen apart. The two, who come to care very much for one another, make a great team and risk their lives more than once for the good of the museum.

Appearances[]

Night at the Museum[]

Octavius is a Roman General in The Hall of Miniatures. He is first seen when Larry gets himself untangled from the rope that the cowboys had used to tie him down. Oct is seen with his legion, telling them to prepare the catapults to attack before Jedediah cuts in, telling him that this isn’t their fight. As Larry says he isn’t a giant and that the miniatures are little, Octavius states that even if they are small, their hearts are, metaphorically speaking, large. As Larry tries to explain that they're miniatures, Octavius yells at him to silence before saying how the Roman Empire has no boundaries, which leads Jed to tell Octavius not to do it. As Larry asks what Jedediah means, Octavius says to unleash hell, which leads his legion to use the catapults and to shoot arrows at Larry.

Stockades

The next morning, Dr. McPhee asks Larry about the situation in the Dioramas. What he asks about is why the Roman miniature (Octavius) is in the stockades in the Old Wild West Diorama with the cowboy standing next to it. This leads Larry to start ‘spit-balling’, describing how Octavius climbed over to the west, and since Jed knows he wants his land, leads to Jedediah getting other cowboys to put him in a stockade.

Oct n his men breaking the wall

During Larry’s second night working as a nighttime security guard, Octavius and his soldiers are seen trying to break down the wall that leads over to the Wild West Diorama. As Larry asks Octavius what’s going on, Oct says that “We expand or we die” before telling his soldiers to hit the wall once more. Larry tries to tell Jedediah to stop since they would hit a wall, leading to them talking before Larry goes back to Octavius. Larry, after saying Octavius’ name wrong, tells him to stop hitting the wall, leading Oct to speak in a sarcastic manner as he says- “It’s Octavius, Mary”.

After this, Larry gets frustrated, picking up both Octavius and Jedediah and setting them down on top of a bench. This is so he can get them to talk to one another to stop the feud between the two. As Larry asks them what their problem is, both Jed and Oct bring excuses to the table before Larry says that they have the whole room to one another, so they don’t need to fight. The pair asks what he means, leading Larry to say that if they behave, they can roam free. Jed and Larry talk about rude nicknames before Octavius pops in, saying he just calls Larry by his name, leading Larry to tell not to be a ‘kiss-a’. This leads to Larry saying that if they don’t do what he says, they’ll end up like the Mayans, whose diorama were previously locked up. That’s the end of their conversation.

Oct n Jed fighting

Some time later, after Dexter had stolen Larry’s keys again and ran past the dioramas, we see both the Old Wild West and Rome dioramas fighting once again, showing that their feud hasn’t ended. Larry makes his way over to Oct and Jed, who are fighting one another. Once he gets their attention, he asks what happened, leading Octavius to say that they’ll never coexist with the cowboys and Jedediah saying how they’re past words and pulling out his guns, saying that they will do the talking. Octavius makes fun of Jed’s guns, seeing as they don’t work, before Jedediah tells him to take a look, leading to him hitting Oct in the face with a gun. They start fighting once more as Larry has to go.

Jed n Oct as Larry gives his speech

Some time later, on Larry’s third night on the job, Larry is giving out a speech about how everyone has to work together. Larry tries to tell Jed and Oct to work together, leading Jed to say he won’t work with ‘toga boy’ before Octavius states that- “Romans work alone”. Jedediah uses a long gun to hit Octavius’s foot, leading him to yelp in pain as Jed says that it didn’t hurt and calls him a baby. This causes Octavius to say it did before he hits Jed with his sword, leading the cowboy to let out a yelp of pain as well as complain that- ‘that was much harder’, referring to the hit. They begin to fight before Larry stops them.

Once Larry stops them, he tells them to ignore the fact that their time periods are 2 thousand years apart, saying that they aren’t that different. He says how both of them are great leaders and how they only want what’s best for their people. They both agree that is what they want. Once Larry says that the tablet needs to be taken back (from the old guards Cecil, Gus and Reginald) or else they won’t come to life at night and how they need to work together, both Octavius and Jedediah cheer.

Jed and Octavius in the snow

In the next scene with them, they are outside going through and hiding in the snow to get to the van. Octavius, Jedediah and three other miniatures follow behind them as they get to the tire, all then holding a ‘mini spear’ right before poking one of the van’s tires. As they do so, they yell and try to hold on. Then, two of the miniatures fly away before another one does, leading Jedediah and Octavius to be holding on. Oct says to Jed for him to ‘save himself’ before Jed says that- “I ain’t quittin you”.

Rc

Later on, we see the pair in a RC Car, Jedediah driving it as Octavius is the passenger, with Rexy’s bone attached to the back of it. They drive to where Larry is and ask how they can help assist with the situation, leading Larry to point at Rexy. We cut to them driving in Central Park, with the pair having fun in the car as they drive with Rexy behind them. Jed tells Octavius to let him hear him yell, which he does.

Jed n Oct in their new RC car

As the pair drive through Central Park, they have to make a turn, one which leads them driving up a ramp of snow and doing a handful of flips in the car before the RC car explodes. It is thought by the other characters that they are dead, only for them to still be alive. They later turn up when Larry, Nick, Ahkmenrah and Teddy are making sure that all the exhibits have returned inside the museum. The pair are last seen in the ending dance party scene, driving in a new RC car that has Rexy’s removable bone tied to it, using it to have Rexy chase them as Nicky rides Rexy.

Battle of the Smithsonian[]

JedOct

Octavius asking Jedediah if he wants to go on a walk.

In the beginning of the movie, Octavius as well as Jedediah talk to Larry about the situation of them being shipped out, being one of the exhibits that is sent to the Federal Archives in the Smithsonian.

When Octavius and Jedediah go and exit the shipping crate a handful of them are in, Jedediah sacrifices himself for Oct, leaving Octavius to go on a rescue mission to free Jedediah since Jed let himself get caught for him. Octavius watches as Jed gets trapped in a bird cage and says how Jedediah should stay alive as he will come back and find him. After going to the White House and running across the field only to be attacked by a squirrel, he takes the squirrel and manages to acquire the help of the Abraham Lincoln statue.

Jed and Octavius hug

Octavius and Jedediah hugging

Octavius then rides on the squirrel to go and save Jedediah, who was placed inside an hourglass by Kahmunrah, as well as get the other exhibits, who have formed an army. Octavius and Jedediah share a tender moment when he goes to the hourglass that Jed is in, speaking to one another, in which Jed tries to say his last words. This causes Octavius to say he’s going to live and takes his helmet off, hitting the hourglass to where it breaks Jedediah free. They then fight together against Kahmunrah, Al Capone, Ivan the Terrible, and Napoleon Bonaparte's men. When they hear that they won the battle, they embrace each other before Jedediah pulls back, most likely due to embarrassment while Octavius keeps a smile on his face.

Secret of the Tomb[]

Jed and Octavius 2

Jedediah and Octavius facing lava

Octavius and Jedediah become lost in the British Museum and have to find a way to get back to Larry and the rest of the exhibits that accompanied him. When about to die in the museum vents, Octavius asks Jedediah to hold his hand. Larry saves them by turning off the vents, and the two miniatures venture through the vents until they jump down into a Pompeii display, which the miniatures do not realize is Pompeii until the volcano begins to erupt. They are saved by Dexter, who Larry sent to find the miniatures. When first meeting the exhibit Sir Lancelot, Octavius comments about his "hypnotic blue eyes". Near the end of the film, when the tablet is corroding and all of the exhibits are beginning to freeze, Jedediah asks for Octavius's hand to hold.

Holding hands

Octavius and Jedediah holding hands, thinking they are going to die.

He is frozen as a wax figure when the tablet is kept in the British Museum. When the tablet returns, he is seen dancing with Jedediah on the records.

Kahmunrah Rises Again[]

In the beginning of the movie, Octavius (along with Jedediah) are one of the many exhibits are are seen cheering after having successfully scaring the new night guard away, even celebrating since they got a new record of 2 minutes and 2 seconds with how quickly the newly hired night guard had quit his job and ran away.

Jed n Oct with Candy

Octavius showing defeat after he can't open the candy bar.

Later on in the movie when Nick is now at the museum, working his new job as a night guard, the Easter Island Head and him overhear Jedediah and Octavius. What he hears is Octavius yelling out with Jedediah making a ‘Yee-haw!’ like sound as the screen shifts over to the pair at the vending machine. Octavius then walks back and forth, giving out a small speech to himself as well as Jedediah. Then Jed gives out yet another “Yee-haw!” as he lassos his role in the air. While the miniature pair try to get a candy bar out of the machine, they both fail, which leads into them seeing Nick as he gets them the candy bar they wanted. After the pair get their candy bat and Nick rips the corner off of the wrapper (after Octavius failed to use his sword to cut it open), Octavius cuts out two pieces for him and Jed, which they both eat with delight.

Jed n Oct attack

Octavius and Jedediah getting ready to attack Kahmunrah.

After Nick failed to lock the basement door and accidentally let Kahmunrah out, Octavius is seen with Jedediah in the Hall of Miniatures, having a catapult with a pair of scissors in the back so it can cut the rope to launch. In the scene we see Octavius sitting inside the catapult launcher as Jedediah is sitting on top of the scissor’s handle, calling out to Kahmunrah to get his attention. Then, after Octavius talks out to Kahmunrah, he tells Jed to fire, leading Jedediah to jump on the scissor’s handle and cut the rope, allowing the catapult to throw Octavius into the air and attack Kahmunrah’s foot.

Due to them being able to stop Kahmunrah for a moment, the rest of the gang had reached them. Nick offers his hand to Octavius and Jedediah, letting the pair ride inside the uniform’s front pocket as they chase after Kahmunrah. This leads Nicky, Attila, Laaa, Dexter, Teddy, Sacagawea, Octavius, Jedediah and Joan of Arc chasing after Kahmunrah to both stop him in his tracks and to get the tablet back.

After Laa had accidentally let the gate in front of the hallway they were in, the group gets stuck behind it, which lets Kahmunrah escape from the museum after being flung out by Rexy. Octavius more or less sits back throughout this scene, instead standing on the floor as Jedediah tries to bust open the lock with a miniature stick of dynamite. This obviously doesn’t work though.

Jedediah talking to Octavius

Jedediah talking to Octavius and the pirate and his lizard.

A few scenes later though, Octavius, along with everyone else in their group, is seen sitting on the subway to get to the Metropolis Art Museum to get the tablet back from Kahmunrah. Octavius and Jedediah, who are sitting in Nick’s jacket pocket, talk to one another about a man on the subway who is dressed like a pirate and feeding his pet lizard a churro. Jed states that the man is a weirdo while Octavius says that the lizard will never be able to be a real ballerina. Due to his comment, the lizard gives them an evil look, causing the pair to sink down into Nick’s pocket, now being out of view.

When the group, which consists of Teddy, Nick, Sacagawea, Laaa, Attila, Dexter, Joan of Arc, Octavius and Jedediah, enter the museum, Jedediah speaks out, stating- “Woo wee.. This place is big” in a somewhat light sounding tone. This seems to annoy Octavius, as he speaks back in a semi-sarcastic tone, stating how ‘everything seems big to them’. Jed just replies back with- “Oh yeah”.

When everyone is inside of an Ancient Egypt Exhibit and walking through the desert, Nick starts to say they will never find Kahmunrah, leading Jedediah to say- “Looks like Nick’s got a little hitch in his giddyap” as Octavius stares between him and Nick. Then, as everyone tries to comfort Nick by saying what they did at either his age or younger, Octavius tells Nick that- “I was just 13 when I helped Rome claim Victory in the Battle of Carthage”. Either way, this comfort doesn’t exactly help, instead leading them to comfort him through telling him other stuff.

Jed speaking with 'cowboy slang'

Jed talking to Oct with 'cowboy slang'.

When the group is inside the Ancient Egypt Exhibit and are actually inside of the Temple of the Sun, Jedediah speaks to Octavius about how, and I quote, “This place is mustier than Sunday britches on a Friday polecat”. This leads Octavius to ask Jedediah in curious yet semi-flat tone about if that is an actual saying or if he makes them up, suggesting that Jedediah might also make up other cowboy sayings as well. Jedediah says that he makes them up due to the fact that it sounds “cowboy-ish”.

When the group confronts Kahmunrah along with Seth again, they are placed in front  of two giant bird guards that Kahmunrah had summoned, leading Nick to worry about the situation as the other museum exhibits prepare to fight. This is where Jedediah talks to Octavius about how they need to help NIcky out in a western-cowboy way, leading to Octavius to tell him that he only understood about 40% of what he said but that if Jed means saving the day, then he agrees. The pair then exits Nicky’s pocket to help fight, seeing as they charge forward a few steps before one of the guard’s staff creates a hole in the ground, causing them to slip into the hole and slide down a tunnel. The tunnel leads them into a new room as they slide onto the ground, only to be confronted by an Egyptian cat, which hisses loudly at the pair, causing both Octavius and Jedediah to scream out loudly.

Octavius complementing Jed about his idea

Oct complementing Jed

As the cat hisses and tries to attack them, the pair are able to dodge it, only for a cobra to be behind them and hiss at them as well, leading both Oct and Jed to scream in a high pitched tone. Then, both the cat and Cobra start to threaten the pair, trying to swipe and bite them as they start to share their ‘last words’. Octavius speaks out, saying “I never thought that we’d go out as bite-sized snacks for two Egyptian house pets”, leading Jedediah to say- “If we’re gonna be tater tots, hopefully your fancy armor will give ‘em a tummy ache”. Due to what Jedediah said about his armor, Octavius gets an idea and calls Jed a- “sweet, simple genius” before taking off his helmet and throwing it into the cobra’s mouth, yelling at the cobra as he does so. With that’ Jedediah then uses his rope as a lasso and tosses it onto the cobra’s mouth, forcing the serpent to choke on it before spitting the helmet out and slithering away. The pair cheers in victory but quickly get interrupted by the cat that hisses at them, causing Jedediah and Octavius to hold each other for safety before the cat just licks each of their faces, acting friendly towards them.

While everyone (except for Octavius and Jedediah) confront Kahmunrah right before he puts the final code into the tablet, Oct and Jed, who are now riding on top of the Egyptian cat that they befriended, come out of a tunnel in the building and attack Seth, causing the God of Chaos to fall to the ground as the trio go back to the others. Then, when everyone fights the guards that Kahmunrah had summoned, Octavius and Jedediah help with the fight, Octavius using his store to attack a few of the guards legs as Jedediah uses his lasso to pull a guard down to the ground with the help of Oct. This quickly ends though, as they get surrounded by three of Kahmunrah’s guards before they get ahold of Nick’s flashlight due to everyone throwing it around. Using Jedediah’s lasso, both Octavius and Jedediah catch the flashlight and swing it around, hitting at least 7 of Kahmunrah’s guards in the face.

Jed n Oct on their cat

Octavius grimaces as Jedediah makes a joke.

After Kahmunrah gets trapped in the underground, Jedediah quickly makes a joke, leading Octavius to say that- ‘he hates him so much sometimes’ before the group runs outside and out of the (now destroyed) temple, only for the sun to now be rising, leading everyone to hug and say goodbye. But, Nick quickly figures out a way for everyone to travel back to the museum just in time, using the poster from Sacagawea as a portal so everyone can teleport through it and go back home. While they are all back at the museum, Octavius says how Nick- ‘would have made a great commander’ back in his day before riding off on the cat with Jedediah.

At the end of the movie where a dance party takes place, Octavius and Jedediah are seen riding their cat before jumping off and dancing together for a while before getting back onto their cat and ride off with one another.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (Video Game)[]

Wii/PC/Xbox 360[]

Jed n Oct about to be shipped off

In the majority of the console ports of the game, Octavius isn't seen until Larry opens the box that he and Jedediah are in. He tells Larry that 'cities have fallen with more grace' after Jedediah states that he's seen sacks of oatmeal look better than Larry. After Larry greets them and asks what's wrong, Octavius states how they have been silenced for too long, before Jedediah speaks after Larry says that he's been busy. When Larry says he heard about them going to the Archives, Octavius calls it the- "Imperial Archives" which Jed has to correct him about, then afterwards Jed tells Larry to go to Ahkmenrah for a visit. Later on, both Jed and Oct say goodbye to Larry, seeing as he will be leaving the museum once again.

Next time we see Octavius is in a cutscene with Larry talking to Kahmunrah, being on top of a crate and looking down at the situation below. Not too long later, as Larry is seen escaping the Federal Archives and gets rescued by General Custer, Octavius waves at the pair then jumps off a pile of crates, landing perfectly into Larry’s front pocket.

Oct being Carried wii

When the two of them get into an elevator, with Larry questioning if whoever is in his pocket is Jedediah, Octavius instead responds with how he was ‘drowning in lint’ before getting picked up by his cape by Larry. Larry asks why he is here, leading Octavius to say that he brings the might of Rome to help, and when asked about his army, he states that one Roman sword is worth a thousand Egyptian spears. Larry states that the Egyptians are ‘kinda big’, for which Octavius responds that he has experience because Rome conquered Egypt. As Larry guesses that counts and Octavius starts to go off with his speech, Larry just says that they should track down the ingots and stop Kahmunrah. This leads Octavius to agree but sounding disappointed.

As Larry enters the National Air and Space Museum and meets Amelia, Octavius is heard repeating the phrase- “Time now to seek the Shield ingot, Larry!”. Along with this, throughout the majority of the National Air and Space museum level, Octavius is heard saying different phrases to Larry to try and get him to go and get the next ingot, also saying some lines about Able the Space monkey.

Octavius about to go into a vending machine

When they get near the vending machine, Octavius is heard saying- “That picture on the machine of vending. Somehow, I feel it holds a clue to what the monkey would like to eat, hm?” before saying “Try giving it some of it’s favorite food, Larry”, seeing as Able is on top of the vending machine. As Larry goes up to it, a cutscene starts, with Octavius waving his arm and sword at the guard, trying to get his attention. Larry starts to talk to himself before Octavius yells his name before stabbing him with his sword, telling Larry to let him ‘free’ the ‘frozen treasure’ for him. As Larry agrees, Octavius gets out of his pocket and lands on the floor before raising his sword in the air and saying- “The die is cast! For Rome!”.

This is where a mini game begins, with the player now playing as Octavius in the vending machine to get Able ice cream, having a time limit of three minutes to do so. The player also has to avoid falling food, losing a health beetle when hit. Octavius states that he shall use his Roman whip to maneuver the place, showing Octavius has a rope the player can use to get around. Once the player gets the ice cream, Able instead runs off, leading to a new section to play out.

In the next area, the Federal Archives once more, Amelia sees her plane and tries to start it as Octavius is bored in Larry’s pocket, stating how they never had problems with chariots starting in Rome.

Going over to the Washington Art Museum, Octavius is heard telling Larry to get the ingot that’s in the fountain that the guard repaired for the Cherubs. While Larry is using the painting ingot to get a key, Octavius says that they should fix the paintings and stop barbarians (Ivan the Terrible and his men) from wrecking the museum, seeing as he states he knows this is what barbarians do. During Ivan’s boss fight, Octavius is heard telling Larry what to do, in a way to tell him how to defeat Ivan. Octavius has a few different phrases that he says to Larry to try and help him out.

Octavius telling Larry to use the Paintbrush ingot

At the end of the boss fight with Ivan, a cutscene will start when Larry gets to a tapestry of the National Museum of Natural History, where Octavius will tell him to use the paintbrush ‘sorcery’ on it. Once they get there, Octavius is heard once again giving advice to Larry to help complete their current task of getting out the room with a dinosaur attacking them.

While in the Rotunda, Larry goes into an Egyptian area, which leads Octavius to sigh in a fond manner before stating that it’s an Egyptian column puzzle, which causes Larry to ask him how he knows about this. Oct responds with how it was- ‘all the rage’ in Rome when he was a boy,  saying to guide the Anubii to free the prize. When Larry asks Octavius what an Anubii is, Octavius speaks with a more harsh tone, telling Larry that it’s the Jackal-headed servants and calls him a fool before saying that they’re eager to play, and that can’t he tell. Larry states that he doesn’t need to be hurtful. Then, Octavius goes on to explain the game to Larry, stating that it’s simple enough and when Larry asks if that’s it, Octavius says how the loser would be fed to lions in Rome. This leads Larry to say to not do it how the Romans did.

Octavius asking Larry who Cleopatra is

After Larry collects the animal ingot and uses it, Octavius once again speaks to tell Larry what to do. Still, when Larry complains about having to rotate the stones, Octavius tells Larry to be patient before explaining how the stones rotate when controlled to do so. Once they finish the game, Cleopatra appears, walking up to the pair and teasing Larry. Octavius asks Larry who Cleopatra is, before Cleo starts to ask about where the tribute is. This is where both Octavius and Larry introduce themselves to her and her as well. After Cleopatra asks for a diamond in return for a secret, Octavius states how that’s fair before stating that she’s cute.

After the Al Capone boss battle and hearing what Kahmunrah had to say about burying Jedediah, Octavius calls out Jed’s name as Larry states they have to save him, leading Octavius to say how his sword is also Larry’s. This is where they go through a Smithsonian Castle tapestry and get to Jedediah, opening the tomb he’s in, revealing him to the pair. As Larry picks him up, Jedediah seems to be dead, leading Octavius to say that he shall avenge him.

Jedediah and Octavius fighting wii

Jedediah wasn’t actually dead though, instead he gets up and asks them what took so long, leading to Larry telling him how he was entered into a dino rodeo. After the pair talk for a quick time, Jed gets put into the same pocket as Octavius, telling him that he needs some elbow room before Octavius tells him to keep his elbows to himself and elbows his arm. Jedediah then states that he claims seniority over the pocket, which causes Octavius to yell at him about how he was there first. Larry breaks up their fighting, seeing as they have more important things to do.

Jed n Oct before Victory

Back in the Air and Space Museum, Octavius has a handful of phrases that he says as Larry uses a rover to attack Napoleon's guards.

Octavius doesn’t say or do anything until Larry defeats Kahmunrah, popping out of his pocket with Jedediah and says ‘Victory!” while Jed says “Ka-Chow!”, leading the pair to fist bump. Octavius, for some reason, doesn’t appear for the rest of the game, even though Jedediah is when they are out of Larry’s pocket.

Trivia[]

  • In the original script for Battle of the Smithsonian, Octavius has a bigger role than compared to the movie, having more of a part like how he was portrayed in the Wii version of the video game.[1]
    • There are multiple similarities with what we see in the script and game, one of them being how on pages 31 and 33, he is seen on top of a crate and jumps down to Larry when he and Custer are driving past Oct.
    • Along with this, there are a few differences though. For example, on pages 49-50, Octavius is shown to have an attraction towards Amelia, calling her- "My Goddess" and trying to suggest hanging out before Larry interrupts him.
      • In the script, Kahmunrah picks up and engulfs Octavius, only to spit him out due to shock when Abraham Lincoln breaks in. This takes place on pages 103-104 of the PDF.
      • On pages 106 and 107, the hourglass scene has changed. Firstly, Octavius tries to break the glass with his shoulder but it doesn't work, which leads him to have the squirrel knock the hourglass over and roll it until it breaks against a wall.
      • Near the end, instead of Octavius and Jedediah flying a mini plane at the end, the script states that they are enjoying a joy-ride on a chariot on page 117.
  • Judging by the name, he is based on actual Roman politician (and father of Augustus) Gaius Octavius.
    • It has also been suspected that Octavius is based off of Augustus, the first emperor of Rome. Something that suggests this is the 'Border Exclusive flash cards', which states that Octavius is "Gaius Octavius Caesar Augustus", who was the first emperor of Rome.
    • Along with this, the Junior novelization of the first movie also calls Octavius, "the former leader of the Roman Empire" on page 65.[2]
  • Unlike Jedediah, who has a minor role in the first movie, he has more action than him, becoming a supporting character in the film.
  • In a few scenes in the 4th movie, Octavius, along with his best friend Jedediah, sometimes randomly disappear from scenes they're visible in when they are inside of Nick's uniform pocket. In other scenes, the pair look flat in his pocket, as if they were paper. There are also scenes where they randomly shrink or grow in his pocket, even if said scenes where this happens doesn't change much prospective wise. This is probably due to how the movie was animated, still these changes aren't really that noticeable.
    • It is noted that in the 4th movie, Octavius tries to comfort Nick about how he feels down, stating- "I was just 13 when I helped Rome claim victory in the Battle of Carthage". This has actually lead people to state that Octavius is a liar, seeing as Octavius is based off of Augustus, who was born in 63 BC when the Battle of Carthage lasted from 149 BC to 146 BC, which happened 83 years before Octavius was born.
      • If Octavius was based off Gaius Octavius, who was Augustus' father, then the Battle of Carthage would of happened 46 years before he was born.
  • Due to certain actions and comments from Octavius towards Sir Lancelot and Jedediah, he is believed to be gay. This 'technically' has been conformed by his actor in a few interviews, where Steve Coogan has stated that Jedediah and Octavius' relationship has a 'subtle' homoerotic relation to it.[3]
    • There is also another interview where Steve Coogan talks about Octavius' feelings towards Jedediah (over all).[4]
    • Along with this, in the Secret of the Tomb Junior Novelization, Octavius calls Sir Lancelot a 'beautiful man' and complements his looks on pages 124 and 125.[5]
  • In the Junior Novelization of the second movie, after Octavius saves Jedediah, the pair both ride on the squirrel into Battle. This takes place on page 146. [6]
  • In the Junior Novelization of the third movie, we are shown an instance where the tablet's corrupted powers effect both Octavius and Jedediah. While they are in a miniature version on Pompeii, Octavius and Jedediah switch accents and their ways of speech before questioning one another about it. This occurs on pages 97-98.[5]
  • For the McDonald's 2009 toy line, Octavius had actually gotten two different toys made of him, one where he rides a squirrel while the other he isn't.
    • Along with this, he has two different info cards. One consists of bullet-pointed facts while the other is one paragraph which explains the toy overall.
  • In Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian: A Capital Adventure, Octavius does not actually appears in the beginning of the book. Unlike in the movie, where he's with Jedediah when Larry visits them before they get shipped out, he is absent until he appears later on.[7]
    • Along with this, Octavius' first mention is alongside General Custer and Amelia in the- 'conventional area' of the Federal Archives. This makes it seem like that, within this book, Octavius was actually never apart of the Rome Diorama in the Museum of Natural History. It's also stated how- "Larry swung his flashlight beam" which then leads him to land on the scene of cargo box with the exhibits from the Museum of Natural History inside of it. This happens on page 21.
      • Something like this can also be seen on pages 28-29, with how Octavius acts, acting like his (supposed) real life counterpart and asking for elephants to help them escape. Even then, him and Jed have never met one another before, seeing as Jedediah and Octavius don't act the same towards each other or know one another.
    • Also in this book, the scene where Octavius went to the White House and encounters a squirrel has been cut out for no apparent reason. This later confuses things, seeing as we go from Octavius' last appearance, where he was in the shipping container, to him on a squirrel and having Abraham Lincoln help them out in a later scene.
      • Along with this scene on page 45, Octavius stated how he’d- “refused to come back having failed Jed”, as well as stating how he brought help as he “swore” to. This is a lie though, seeing as Octavius never swore to bring help, only saying that he’d be happy to help out.
